Lithium Bromide (LiBr) has significant hygroscopic properties, which means it can readily absorb and retain large amounts of water. This makes it particularly useful in various applications. Let’s dive into the function of lithium bromide and its application principles:

Function of Lithium Bromide
Lithium bromide is mainly employed as a strong desiccant in certain air conditioning systems and industrial drying processes due to its hygroscopic nature. Besides, it’s highly soluble in water, which further contributes to its use in absorption refrigeration systems.
In addition, lithium bromide has been utilized in pharmaceutical applications. Although it’s no longer as common due to the advent of safer alternatives, it had been employed as a sedative and in the treatment of bipolar disorder.
Principle of Application in Absorption Refrigeration Systems
One of the most common uses of lithium bromide is in the absorption refrigeration system. The working principle of such a system revolves around a continuous cycle of evaporation and absorption.
Step 1: Evaporation
The refrigerant, which is typically water, evaporates at a low pressure in the evaporator, absorbing heat from the surroundings and providing a cooling effect.
Step 2: Absorption
The lithium bromide solution in the absorber then absorbs the water vapor. This absorption process is exothermic, meaning it generates heat, which needs to be dissipated to sustain the cycle.
Step 3: Desorption
In the generator, heat is applied to the solution, causing the water to boil and separate from the LiBr. The water vapor goes back into the evaporator to continue the cooling process.
Step 4: Condensation
The water vapor is then condensed, liberating heat, which is taken away by a separate cooling cycle.
Step 5: Throttling
This is the process where the high-pressure liquid refrigerant goes through the expansion valve and expands, decreasing its pressure and temperature before returning to the evaporator.
By repeating these steps, the system serves as a refrigeration cycle where LiBr is used to continually absorb and desorb water, resulting in heat absorption and cooling effect.
Please bear in mind that while lithium bromide is extremely useful due to its properties, it needs to be handled with care as it could be dangerous if misused. Moreover, its use in medical treatments must be performed under appropriate healthcare guidance.
